About the process
The importance of Liquiñe as our World Crafts City (WCC)
The craft of the traditional woodwork of Liquiñe is unique in its kind in the world. Mainly, because of the geographical and demographic characteristics that framed its development. After the so-called "Pacification of the Araucanía" (1881), the large indigenous Mapuche population that inhabited the plains of the eastern shore of Lake Calafquén were confined to indigenous reductions, such as Challupén, Traitraico and Pucura, located in an Andean foothills sector to the northwest of what today is Liquiñe and Coñaripe. Liquiñe (Teary eyes in the mapuzugun language), emerges as settlements of Mapuche communities and stands out as a pre-mountainous zone of forests of Patagonian forest. World Crafts Council

Details that matter (the recipe)
1. We prepare the paddle with fine sandpaper grit 400.
2. Then we seal and wax the wood with 100% natural wax (Osmo*).
3. After the sealing and waxing we smoothly sand the paddle before painting.
4. Once the paddle is ready we hand-paint our designs with water-based paints.
5. Then we add a fine and smooth sanding again to prepare for sealing.
6. Finally we seal and paint again the paddle with water-based varnish.
Our unique and sustainable woods
At Hualle we deeply respect the processes of the materials that we transform. That's why we only make our creations from naturally fallen trees. Our wood selection is not in danger of extinction.
• Mañio: Medium to large tree, reaches a height of around 20 to 25 meters. Found from the Cautin Province (Region IX) down to Ultima Esperanza (Region XII). Araucania and Chilean Patagonia. 38º to 53º Latitude South.
• Rauli Hualle: Leafy tree up to 45 m in height and 2 m in diameter. It grows from Region VI to Region X. Chilean Araucania. 35º to 42º Latitude South.
• Lingue: Thick barked evergreen tree, up to 30 m in height and 80 cm in diameter. Grows from the Aconcagua Province down to Llanquihue. More abundant in the Malleco and Valdivia mountain ranges. Chilean Araucania. 35° to 42° Latitude South.
• Coihue Hualle: Leafy tree, with brown to dark grey bark. Grows in central and southern Chile between Regions VI and XII. Araucania and Chilean Patagonia. 35º to 47º Latitude South.
• Radal: Leafy evergreen bush. Its bark is used as medicine for respiratory disorders. Grows in Chile’s temperate rainforest from Region IV to Region X. Chilean Araucania. 35º to 44º Latitude South.
• Roble Hualle: Reaches a height of50 m and 2 m in diameter. Grows in deep soil at low altitudes from Region V to Region X. Chilean Araucania. 33º to 43º Latitude South.
